Jeannie signing in from Bali.  We landed late at night and got our first good look this morning.  While there was an initial "wow - we're really in SE Asia now" reaction to the narrow streets, three cockroaches in the hotel room, pervasive motorbikes and mangy stray dogs; Kuta is nevertheless a friendly and welcoming town.  We are offered "transport" every five feet as we walk down the streets, but we can't really blame the locals since there are fewer tourists now than there have been in the past and they are all desperate for those tourist dollars/rupiah.

Kuta is definitely the Daytona Beach area of Bali from what we've heard.  We visited the beach, saw the surfer dudes and grabbed an air-conditioned meal in MacDonald's.  We've been good about avoiding American fast food, but we are both leery of what is called the "Bali Belly", so we caved.  Little did we know that the experience would be far from that of American MacDonald's.  They had similar food items, but they were playing the foulest gangsta rap we've ever heard piped into a public place.  Corporate execs would flip out, but the Balinese simply bopped along to the beat and seemed a little oblivious to they lyrics.

We decided to head to the cultural center of Bali - Ubud - which is about an hour and a half inland.  We found a great restaurant overlooking the town square and palace and finally started to relax.  Sean loved the restrooms because there were goldfish swimming through the fountains adjacent to the facilities.

He also loves the frog and eel hunting that goes on by torchlight each night in the rice paddies surrounding our fantastic hotel (Tegal Sari).  I love the bubble bath I took while he watched the hunt.
