Jeannie here. We had about a day to explore Auckland, but we were sad that this big city is not nearly as charming or hospitable as Christchurch or any of the south island cities. The people seemed kind of gruff to us in our limited exposure, and we are happy to be headed to Sydney.
We spent our day in transit between buses and ferries, but we did manage to get out of the inner city and visit Devonport across the water. It was a lovely old town with great views of the harbor and the city. The pleasant, century-old buildings, huge magnolias, and public parks added to the charm of this town. We also had amazing corn fritters and fish & chips at a Croatian man's diner. His 16 year old son is about to make it big in a rock band apparently.
The flight out is at 6:30 am - can't wait to try to get Sean up at 3:45 tomorrow.
