So......it was finally holiday time and I should first make reference to my entry title......herbal toothpaste.
We travel light, Mr T and I, so to avoid clear pastic bags and declaring fluids, pastes and liquids in our hand luggage, we decided to buy toiletries on arrival. We had taken the bus from Khon Kaen to Bangkok and then flown to Krabi. Well, I have seen toothpaste, white, sometimes stripey, sometimes fluorescent blue, but never the brown sludge that oozed from this tube. It resembled poo and although had the aroma of minty herbs, putting that in your mouth for the first time induced the gag reflex and for a time that same brown colour washed over my teeth, tongue and gums. It all ended well, my pearly whites still in tact!
It was Mr T's first trip to the south, a 12 hour bus trip meant only an hour by plane, hence the flight. I had been here 4 years ago, on a volunteer project in a local school, but excited to return.
We packed it all in, took trips to the stunning islands off the coast of Ao Nang, got to Leonardo Di Caprio's 'Beach' at just after 7am to avoid the crowds and also had time to spend 3 days on the very unspoilt Koh Lanta, it's low season now and you could have beaches to yourself, few guests in the hotels.
We snorkelled on the high seas, turquoise clear waters as warm as a bath, a colourful array of fish feeding from your hands.
We met a lovely couple, Dennis and Bonnie, from Colorado in the USA, we shared a longboat with them and took in some of the beautiful island sights around the island of Phi Phi.
It's the start of the rainy season, but the weather was glorious, a few showers in the afternoons, but woke up to the sun rising and a beer or two seeing it set.
It's a predominantly muslim area and the people could not have been nicer, the same smiles and wonderful experience I had 4 years ago. It was that experience that assured my return.
And so back to school next week, it's a great feeling going back to something you really want to do, instead of something you have to or are supposed to do............
