A geology blog on the Bay of Fundy

A few hours drive from Charlottetown is the small New Brunswick town of Moncton and home to the C'mon Inn hostel. Although I didn't stay long here the host (can't remember his name but I think it may be Trent?) is a colourful character. Now working for Oxfam he can tell you many stories from being deported several times from America for peaceful protesting as well as being stuck in a war torn Sierra Leonne in the late 90's. Can't say a lot to promote Moncton other than it's a good base to explore the Bay if Fundy coastline.

A perculiar rock formation

First stop, Hopewell rocks, home to these amazing flowerpot rock formations created by the powerful tidal effect. Unfortunately I arrived at high tide so couldn't see a lot but 6 hours later at low tide you can see this geology phenomenon. Even if you not an enthusiastic geologist it is still worth visiting the Bay of Fundy coastline and admire the largest tidal range in the world. At Hopewell rocks, there is a difference of 12 metres and at low tide you can walk along the sea floor admiring the mud and seaweed. Just like a beach holiday to the beach resort of Weston-Super-Mare (SW England).

The following day I did a short hike inside Fundy national park before continuing my journey to the US-Canadian border. I stopped at the border town of St. Stephens for a late lunch as I attempted to spend my spare Canadian dollars at a KFC restaurant. This however turned out to be the most entertaining fast food meal I have ever had. In a deserted restaurant I got talking to Jessie (the cashier), discovered she had applied to sing on Canadian Pop Idol and before you know it she was singing Sheryl Crow songs to me.

She was good, but I don't think she progress further than a very good karaoke singer, but I would love to be proved wrong.

From there I passed back into the USA and endured the usual 20 questions at the US border before continue the long drive through Maine to New Hampshire and the White Mountain National Park.
