New York, the commercial capital of the USA, home to the famous Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building and an awful baseball team.

I arrived in New York after an exhaustingly long flight from Liverpool. I really do question Flyglobespan choice of aircraft, as a trip that should take 7-8 hours took 12 hours with two refuelling stops (Ireland and Canada) on a small Boeing 737 with a damaged toilet after a heavy landing in Ireland to pick more passengers up. Getting through immigration wasn't too stressful, only needed to provide my fingerprints while the American immigration officer was trying to be sarcastic about why I am travelling and I didn't get stopped by customs. On top of this the airport transport service arranges a minibus to drop you and fellow passengers to their homes/hotels for US $19. Unfortunately if you are the last ones to be dropped off, you could be in that minibus the best part of two hours. But by midnight, New York time I had arrived at HI-New York Hostel only 46 hours after departing Poole.

The first few days sightseeing in New York were short and sweet as I slowly recovered from my jet lag. On the first day i stayed in Lower Manhattan to see the Statue of Liberty, Battery Park, The national museum of American Indians, Walls Street, Ground Zero, Chinatown and Little Italy while the second day was spent walking around Central Park and shopping at the enormous Macy's department store.

The Icon of Hope, A monument once stood in the World Trade Center Plaza and somehow survived the falling debris of the 9/11 terrorist attack is now found in the nearby Battery Park

By the third day I was half human again and felt I could cope with a longer day sightseeing. I started off with a trip to the top of the Empire State Building where the view would be fantastic is it wasn't so hazy because of the smog, but its still very impressive. Even more remarkable were the pigeons perched on the edge of the wall.

I tried to visit the UN building but couldn't get within 2 blocks of it due to a United Nation meeting despite my best effort of walking right through a police barricade. So I spent most of the third town looking around mid-Manhattan.

In the evening I decided to treat myself to a night at Broadway and watch the longest running musical on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera. I got this half-priced ticket at a bargain $59 from a TKTS office in Lower Manhattan. The only catch is you can only buy it on the day, so there is never any spare tickets for the popular musicals however you can save alot of money. Definitely value for your money as my seat was very central on the middle tier.
The rest of the night was spent in vain trying to chat up the Kiwi girl but nothing materialised.

4th and final day was spent wandering around aimlessly in Manhattan. I popped into the interesting Museum of Sex. This museum only has 3 sections which changes regularly however for my visit I had the luck of having the topics of Sexual fantasies, the evolution of sexual and pornographic films and a small section on sex toys. Very handy if you want to see the Paris Hilton sex videos.

That evening I took the subway out of Manhattan to Queens to watch the New York Mets play St Louis Cardinals. What a mistake! It was as dull as cricket with the Cardinals convincingly winning 3-0. Also very weird when the picture board is telling the crowd to cheer. Still it was only $30 wasted.

Following morning caught a greyhound bus out of New York to the nearby city of Boston and believe it or not they check your luggage just to make sure your not a terrorist threat.
