Arrived on the train in Yogyakarta 9 hours later where the train station runs parralel to the main street and was greeted by a hostel owner who wanted me to stay at his place and after finding out it was only 25,000 and 3mins away took him up on the offer.Checked into Hotel Anda down a narrow cobble street off the main part,Marlboro street after the Duke of Marlboro and immediately fell into the trap of the offer to go and see the local art school.
Basically all the touts try and take you to a local school of art which is only open today!and you get there to be shown loads of traditional "batik" Indonesian art,where they use bees wax onto cloth or sarongs,so you can even wash the painting or fold it up to send it home.Some of the stuff was really good but when you know your getting hassled you just dont want to buy anything!
Yogyakarta a much nicer place after the hassle and heat of Jakarta,much more relaxed with everything easy to reach by foot and all spilling off the one main road.Walked down to the Sultans palace,where the bird market was with stalls full of hand local made bird cages and after walking round looking at the hundreds of birds in tiny cages a bloke latches himself onto me,and continues to take me round the market to where the "other" animals are kept!Deeper into the market at the back,see stalls with vampire bats hanging in cages,tiny puppies,iguanas,monkeys and even reticulated pythons in tiny cages poor things cramped up.He starts taking me off to show the Sultans pool but made an excuse that had to go meet a friend as knew he'd soon be asking for money or to con me somehow!
Walked off and tried to find the water castle myself and down the local back streets to where a castle is built over the water and after getting lost a local lad shows me down to it and around the underground tunnels the prince built to escape in.
Next morning up at 6am to get the bus trip I'd booked for 50,000 to Borobudur,one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the world,an hours drive from Yogya.
Arrived at sunrise at the monument,a huge massive lego block at the top of a hill with cone shaped towers like upside down funnels all along the top with buddhas inside.The monument was impressive,
but after seeing Angkor Wat in Cambodia I dont think anything can compare to that by way of monuments and temples now!
Got back from the trip at 11am and decided to catch the next train leaving at 1pm instead of waiting for the 9pm train with nothing to do and jumped on the train to Surabaya
