Took the Spanish blokes advice about avoiding the train for 30ringhit to the airport and took the skybus for 9 which was sound!Got the sky train monorail and then onto a bus direct for the airport for 2hours,but having told me it'd take ages was at the check in desk at Kuala Lumpur Airport for 11.30am and not flying till 3pm! Wasted the 3hours in the airport with no shops and nothing to do and eventually boarded the plane.Sat on the plane for half hour, when we get told to get off as there is a plane with a fire in the engine!?Got off and 3 engineers rush on board while we all sit staring from the departure lounge. After telling us another hour, another hour eventually they give in and say the planes basically knackered and they dont have another apart from a flight landing from Bangkok which is to stop and refuel before going onto Singapore so they arrange to hijack that one,4hours after we should have left. Sat chatting to an English woman who's lived in Pnohm Pen for 18months as her husband works as a bomb disposal expert as there are still millions of landmines scattered still around Cambodia and Vietnam from the war.Telling me best places to go and where to avoid, especially a club called the Heart Of Darkness where 4 people have been shot in the last month,cheers!AND.......She comes from Kent but lives in Formby,Liverpool, with a house on the same street AS.......STEVIE G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Her daughters grown up with him at school and he goes down their local!Duncan Ferguson lives two doors down-the house where 2 burglars broke in and he beat them up and held them till police came!So was well impressed, was gonna get her phone number and get her to get him on the phone when shes next home!
Eventually swapped all bags from one plane to another and kicked the other flight passengers off.Sat there another half hour and more engineers come on looking puzzled, and then another announcement from the captain that the planes navigation panel isnt working! No wonder it was cheap!!!! Sat there for another half hour,6hours after should have left for Cambodia when we eventually take off and sit with belts on for the 2hour flight through the thunder storm and turbulence. Arrive in the airport and share a taxi to the river side with an Aussie girl for $5,dive into the Angkor hotel which has a T.V and fan for $6 a night and after sat in airport lounge with no food all day sat watching the Germany Sweden game lay on my bed with spicy noodles and 3 cans of Angkor beer from room service-ahh bliss! Got up next morning and walked around the city in sweltering heat, bit of a shock being back in place like this after the clean and cultured Kuala Lumpur but back now to the shanty houses, markets and dirt of the streets and constant traffic and hassle from tuk tuk drivers and motor bike taxis every 2 steps.
Kids washing in the gutters of the street after a downpour of rain, and say "hello mr", with an innocent smile, and when you look back at them they then hold out their hands and bark "money!Decided to leave the sights of the Palace etc until I come back when Goncalo gets here from Bangkok and booked a bus ticket for next morning for Sihanoukville on the south coast.
