Back on the road again where we watched the terrain transform into a mountainous desert and pretty soon after midday we hit Brandberg where Vikki and I succeeded where Alun had failed in upgrading to a private room when we hit Swakopmund - the request for a refund on the dorm booking was greeted with some animosity and we put it down to Alun on his power trip leading his little lambs around...
We got back on the road again after Peter had an unexplained pre-menstrual moment - lots of tension in the air and a little bit of cabin fever! It is obvious that people are ready to have a few days of their own personal space - us included
Peter's driving seems to directly reflect his mood and as the truck snarled and thundered it's way through to desert we felt he had degenerated into some kind of homicidal maniac!
We arrived, bruised of arse, at Spitzkoppe ('Spy hill' or 'Spikey Mountain' were both given as the translation - take your pick!) which is a range of amazing rock formations - 'Flintstones, meet the Flintstones....!'.
Vikki and I went exploring the rocks and some of the more agile and driven members of our group tried to reach the summit before sundown. The sunset was beautiful, reds and oranges on the rocks whilst a rainbow could be seen at the same time - surreal and cartoon-like!
We ate barbequed Oryx which was delicious and Alun surprised us by breaking out some boxes of wine which were soon severely depleted! A good night in very pleasant surroundings but it was a struggle to sleep through the howling wind and the sound of footsteps and other strange noises outside our tent for the majority of the night...!
