We trucked towards the Malawian border along bad roads with inpatient truck drivers and agreed that we would be pleased to make the change from Tanzania. It was time for the breakfast stop and a 'vulture culture' ensued as it has tended to do since we became a bigger group....people taking extra before checking if we have enough for round one, bowls of cereal being poured with little regard for portion control........anyway enough moaning for now......
All this, and the ongoing tarps up/tarps down issue. Cabin fever anyone..
Crossed the border to Malawi where we changed our money to Kwacha and some of the guys handed out pens and notebooks to the waiting kids who were so happy to receive them (not asking for money for once - just wanted pens or apples! Bless!). We entered Malawi with a great sense of satisfaction and instantly felt the friendliness of the people as a stark contrast to our recent Tanzanian experiences - kids waving wildly and screaming hello with genuine joy now replacing the indignation exhibited by a lot of the faces on the other side of the border. It felt a little like when we crossed to Rwanda and the effect on the truck is tangible - people waving to kids with wide smiles and a positive outlook. Bring it on!
We arrived at Chitimba Camp situated right on Lake Malawi which is absolutely beautiful. We were treated to a meal of Minestrone soup made by Vikki's cook group and finished up with several drinks around the campfire. Malawi is very hot and clammy and so naturally the body craves some light refreshment...
After a couple of vodkas Vikki discovered a new talent - with her hair in a bun she can achieve a very convincing impression of a 'bobble-headed' Guinea Fowl in mid-sprint! After another couple of drinks Vikki became a 'Guinea headed biggle fowl' which apparently farts freely on the edge of it's stool.
Sue surprised us all by mixing vodka and gin in her glass - we joke that she is the resident alcoholic (!) - and said she was having a 'Vodkin'...
Sawa/Poa = 'Ok'
