Last week saw the arrival of the little cobba, son of 'the Wilsons' (my surrogate family for those who've not being following). There was a load of intermittent talk about him needing new direction, new opportunities and all that so I said the only thing I could say under the circumstances: 'Put him on a plane.' They did. He arrived in one sweaty piece and I swung by in true Aussie fashion screeching to a halt in the ute outside arrivals, gave him a quick squeeze for his mum and we chugged back to Boulder, where he started work immediately with yours truly setting up the sound and lighting rig for a swish event at the local town hall. Happy days cobba, welcome to Kal!

Actually I was really glad to have him here (in the grand scheme of things he was a godsend.) I've met some people in my time and for a seventeen-year old - which seems a lifetime away these days - the lad's up there, right on form, and right on par with Scottish Dean from back in the New Zealand days. Dean had that natural rare gift of blinding you with inspiration, Jay's got the tools and the fibre to become one of life's giants - so many things fundamentally in place that are just itching to be nurtured. I couldn't wait to clip him round the ear and tuck him under the Woz wing. We managed to get him started with a mate of mine Matty, who's just set up a company making silly money doing carpentry. Jay was the final piece in the Matty jigsaw. All good.

Today saw us squeeze ourselves into the liveliest event of the year: race day - a huge day here in Kalgoorlie and a perfect opportunity to see something other than fluorescent jackets and empty glasses. The weather was glorious, the beer was cold and the day was lazy - cruisy times for new beginnings..
