This entry's a bit of an odd ball. It's one of a few quick ones I'll have to 'slot in' mainly to keep the route tracked and map intact. It was originally part of the next entry but makes the map look as if we've travelled for days along a senseless route when we haven't.
We spent tonight in the middle of nowhere - a place called Barrytown on the West Coast known by a few of the locals as 'Baz Vegas'. We'd travelled a good seven hours down the West coast from Abel Tasman on our way to the Frans Josef Glacier. The obvious choices for stop overs being either Greymouth or Barrytown - both as quiet, both as lifeless. We entertained ourselves with another viewing of our Skydive DVD's in the lounge and a huge game of Killer Pool in the bar. To add to the fun of the pool comp we (the lads) all had to wear a dress which was kindly provided by the hostel. I think they're starting to randomly clutch at straws in a desperate attempt to put Baz Vegas on the map. I was given a particularly attractive pink frilly number which could only have been inherited from someone's great grandmother. The odd thing to report here is that I ended up winning the pool comp. Me. I've never won anything and I'm not particularly good at pool. Maybe it was my new dress? Who knows?
So we're back on the West Coast. Once again it's wild, rugged and the winds are fierce, putting a different perspective on things, a different 'feel'. Tomorrow we're off further South in to the heart of the Southern Alps amongst the glaciers. And I can't wait.
