Where I stayed
This morning I took the long walk up the steep hill of Queen St to where it meets 'K Road'. There I met Young Neil who was waiting on the corner. We crossed the road and walked over to the huge blue building called 'The Rock Shop'.
Thirty minutes later I walked out with it.
In the shop I had tried a number of acoustics that were suitable for travelling with - reasonably cheap yet with half-decent tonal characteristics. The last one I tried was the one. I knew it as soon as my fingers touched the strings. It had a beautiful soft tone and was very modestly priced, so it was 'the one' - and I was over the moon.
I've spent the last three weeks playing other people's guitars or listening to people playing guitar. Whether it be at the chilled out 'Beach House' in Paihia where the live singer/guitarist plays enthusiastically most evenings, or the 'Salty' next door where there is another live guitar duo on, or with 'Simon' from Devon with whom I spent many happy afternoons jamming with at the Centabay.
The crunch finally came on Sunday evening. I went with Young Neil, MadSimon and the girls to an open-mic night. It was at an Irish bar called 'The Dog's Bollix' just off K Road, where people of all abilities, styles and backgrounds could get up on stage and have a go. It was a most enjoyable evening, an evening which finally toppled me over the edge - I just couldn't hold out anymore, I had to get one.
So this afternoon I spent a couple of hours jamming with Young Neil at his flat on K Rd which he shares with MadSimon. And what an enjoyable afternoon it was. Young Neil has settled in quite nicely and has got himself a pretty reliable job (good for him) - though I think he's 'itching' to get out of Auckland as he's actually been here since day one and hasn't seen anything of New Zealand yet. His flatmates seem pretty decent too, a few Koreans and an unusually tall French chap.
I received a text later from Nate saying that it was his birthday tomorrow and he's having a few people round at his place for a few beers from 7pm, address provided. Should be quite a night!
