Nevertheless we popped along to the local national parks vistor centre for some tips about what there was to see in the mountains. A lovely lady advised to take a short drive to see the Dangar Falls at one end of town and then to come back and do a rainforest walk which lead to another waterfall which you could walk behind... She did however warn us that due to the wet weather the leaches would be out to play and to wear long socks, trousers and long sleeve tops to stop being sucked to death! And then just to make matter worse she sent on to say they had recently had a spate of leaches in people's eyes so to be careful out there! Yuk....
Anyway we popped over to Dangar Falls which actually turned out to be quite an impressive and power waterfall just on the edge of town... A short walk down to the base readied us for our heavy hike into the rainforest! Returning to the visitors centre we then set off to Crystal falls, the rain had also put off most other vistors and we felt like we were in the middle of the jungle alone, towered by enormous trees and strange plants and flowers.. The mist also added a creepy feel to the place and added to our excitement of having a hike in the forest... The walk ended in reaching the crystal falls and although it was not quite impressive as the others they had built an impressive suspesion bridge for a good view of the falls and then a walk way on the rocks behind it!
Back in the camper after our hike we headed to the old town of Bellingen, which looked like a town that had stood still in time since the gold rush! Having driven through it late the day before we couldn't refuse the opportunity to stop and have a wander round, along with donning the Cowboy hat and boots and keeping an eye out for the bad guys :-)
After our little trip back into the past we continued to Coffs Harbour, boasting that it is the biggest town between Sydney and Brisbane we were expecting lots to see and do, but were slighty disappointed when trip advisor only turned up 14 things in the entire town! We parked the camper at a caravan park and decided we would have a wander to the beach... Unfortunately our short walk turned out to be one of those memorable holiday disasters, where your mother claims that its only 5 mins on the map, and 2 hours later you are still walking with no sight of the sea
Back at camp we did get to meet some of the more permanent resisdents over our BBQ, who kindly after the sun had set introduced us to the friendly possoms who come to the park each evening to grab the left over food! They were extremely cute and tame eno ugh to take food out of your hand and have a quick pat. Hannah was nonthe less extremely pleased....
Today we had booked to go to the Porpise pool! Advertised as the most interactive marine experince in the world we didn't quite know what to expect apart from the fact we had heard they had dolphins and seals... First we drove down to the beach for a spot of brunch on the front (being a lovely day we couldn't refuse) before heading over to the attraction... On arrival we were given a programme as the pool has a morning and afternoon session. After a quick wander round first on the list was Dolphin and Seal kisses...This gave you the chance to pop along to the enclourses and have the animals come up and give you a little kiss... This was then followed by a dolphin and seal show with the usual tricks (see our video :-) )
But then instead of the usual being sent on your way you were then allowed in a very relaxed enivroment to interact with the animals... You could stroke or throw a ball for the dolphins, feed the seals + little penguins (Thats right folks, i got to feed a pengiun :-) ) along with the fish, which although doesn't sound as exciting turned out to be a tank of very large carnivorous fish that ripped the food out of your grabbers! Scary stuff as you can see from the photo of hannah feeding one!
Finally after our exciting day of playing with the purpoise hit the road and headed for the Campervan Mecca of Bryan Bay.... We have stopped in one of our free rest areas about 20mins away ready to hit the bay in style tomorrow with a few action packed days of Snorkelling and Surfing in the pipeline...
