The City with a Lake
Our first experience in China was not what we expected. We arrived in a nice new airport and drove through a clean modern city along a river. After an hour we arrived in the center of town and drove around the famous West Lake. There was a Bentley Dealership, hundreds of coffee shops, huge parks, smiling people. It basically looked like a city you would live in, which wasn't a landscape or concept we had encountered since we arrived in Asia a month and a half ago. West Lake is mentioned in the 1000 places book and lived up to its billing. The next day we went to the Lingyin Temple (AD 326 but has been destroyed and rebuilt 16 times) which was packed to with China Tours but an amazing temple in the hills. We wrapped up our Hangzhou experience by visting and buying Chinese Green Tea.

The Sparky Statue (reply) May 7, 2006 12:12 EST by kellyv
The 'Sparky' Statue was a tribute to me from the Chinese locals after my last trip there. Notice how the belly is in perfect proportions.
