The Birthday Boy in China
I never thought I would be excited about having two eggs and some bread for breakfast on my Birthday, but how things change when you are in China. We got up early and met up with Dale from Wales who has the same Birthday as me (Don't tell anyone but he is 10 years older than me) and went to the Hostel down the road for breakfast. After breakfast I made a quick call home and then got back to the hotel to jump in the bus.
The majority of our day was spent at the Big Buddha "Da fo" the largest outdoor seated Buddha. The crowds were through the rough for this one man show. The highlight of lowlight of the day was watching a mother allow their kid to pee on the ground in the middle of the line, so everyone could walk through it. NICE! I was so surprised that she knew what I wanted for my Birthday or did she get me mixed up with Flanagan (Oh ya Happy Birthday John!)
After another bus ride...man I love buses... we arrived in the lower Monastery, which was going to be our home for the first night. Actually it was pretty awesome that we were actually going to be spending the night in a working Monastery. He checked in and the hit the bar...or the hostel down the street. Originally I was pretty surprised when John our group leader told me that we were having dinner at the Titty Bar! Now that would be a story for my birthday. "We went to the Chinese Titty Bar for drinks and then went home and crashed at the Monastery" Well it turned out that he was saying the Teddy Bear Cafe. Oh well!
The group went to the Teddy Bear Cafe for dinner and drinks. In celebration of Dale and I's birthday, John ordered some liquor, which tasted horrible but was fun to try. After dinner Dale snuck in some Budwieser Beers into the Monastery for our Monatery party. We drank our beers and the other tour group had some more liquor to finish my night off with a shot.
So I spent my 32nd Birthday drinking Budwieser in a Chinese Monastery...pretty damn cool! Oh did I mention that we were awoken the next morning at 4:30AM by the Monks chanting, or was that the liquor talking?
