Just this past week, it was reported that there was a relatively severe earthquake that occurred off the coast of Taiwan and that there may be a chance of a tsunami striking the island.

Thankfully, the earthquake did not cause any damage to the island and no effects were felt in my city.  Thank you to everyone who e-mailed with concerns about my safety, but rest assured, there is nothing to be worried about.

The city of Taichung is not on the coast of Taiwan and has very, very low risk of being affected by any tsunami that could happen.  Additionally, the last severe earthquake that caused a lot of damage was in 1999.  That does not mean that an earthquake cannot strike at any time and cause significant damage, but it happens very rarely and the buildings here are constructed to withstand strong earthquakes.

Another typhoon has descended upon our island this weekend.  This one has not been severe by any means (a category 2) and there has been very little wind.  This typhoon has dropped a consistent amount of rain on our island for the past three days.  It does stop raining occasionally for 10-30 minutes, but it has been kind of tiring being stuck indoors for such a long time.  What also makes things frustrating is that it is now Moon Festival and has really dampened the plans of many families to celebrate the Chinese holiday.  Our staff was even invited to the home of our school's founder, Bih Huah, for a barbeque that had to be postponed to a later date.

However, despite the rain, it has not stopped people from firing their fireworks.  It is kind of odd to look out my window and see nothing but rain with the occasional firework going off in the distance.  Only in Taiwan!
