Margaret and I headed out to the Calvados countryside. First stop the Tourist Office where I asked the lady to show us anything non-war. The Circuit de Cidre won the day!

This whole area east of Caen is known for its apple growing and cider producing. They have a whole 20km circuit where you can visit a stack of distilleries and get completely ripped - I suggest you take the tourist bus.

Margaret and I did it a little more sedately and had a lovely cup of tea in a tiny village in a restaurant that used to be a train station. We then let Natasha lead us through all the backroads on the "short route" which is always far more interesting than the highways. We cruised through hundreds of lovely villages and I was astounded by the architecture of the buildings. Gone are the stone cottages from the coast, to be replaced with thatch and tudor.

Later in the afternoon I dropped Margaret back at the accommodation and I headed off again to visit one of distilleries in Cambremer. Unfortunately I missed the English tour but I managed to get most of the gist of the guide on the French tour. He must have been funny as he had the crowd laughing and the children giggling. After about an hour we all retired to the "tasting" area where I duly sipped on some cider but drew the line at the Calvados - I was driving doncha know.

I bought a bottle to bring home with me (see pictures).

I cruised slowly back through yet more divine little villages to end my day on the beach with chicken, croissants and chocolates. It is, after all, My Best Buddy's birthday!
