Hilal had planned on waking up at 3:30 and head out of Samail at 4:00 so he would not be late to work in Dubai. Well that plan did not work out. He did not wake me up until 5:00 (still early as I did not hit the sack until 1:00). Luckily I had already packed and was ready to go in 10 min. We went back the same way we came – through Fanja and then through the mountains on a fun little road. On the highway we got some gas and then Hilal requested me to drive. I was a little shocked but I saw that Hilal was very tired. So drive I did for the next several hours – all the way from outside Muscat to the UAE border. I averaged 75 mph the whole way – slower than Hilal. He did get some good sleep in.
At the UAE border I had to get a new visa which cost a few dollars. Right at the border was this small food stand where Hilal got us some breakfast – 2 egg filled pita sandwiches and, surprise, a Lemon Drink. Tons of wasps flying around but no one seemed to care (in US everyone would have had a major spazz). Now we were over half way to Dubai. In UAE the road turned to desert surroundings vs. the costal and mountainous surroundings in Oman.
Just outside Dubai, Hilal pulled a taxi over to take me the rest of the way to the Dubai neighborhood of Deira which is on Dubai Creek (it is more like a bay). This way, Hilal could make it to work a little earlier. The ride only cost around 50 DM which is around $15. I stayed at the Riviera Hotel which was pretty nice but expensive for me (a little over $100 a night). But it was pretty nice with a large room, large bathroom, and a wonderful view over Dubai Creek. I could even see the Burj Khalefa Tower from my room (the world's tallest building). I relaxed for about an hour and then decided to hit the souq’s (market).
The sun was again hitting really hard, but since I was next to water and around very tall buildings which blocked the sun it was not as bad as the other day in Muscat. First I got me a 1.5L cold water for 2 dh (around 75 cents). I checked into an electronics store for GPS since Hilal wanted me to get one for him. Then I walked to the real shops – tiny stores run by mostly Indians selling everything under the sun. And half of them REALLY wanted you to go in their shops ("sir, would you like to go inside" or “Sir, I have Rolex, special price for you”) I felt like I was in India as I saw very few Arabs. I walked through all kinds of markets – clothes, gold, spice, electronics, sports, tools, etc.) Gold is suppose to be the big thing to buy here. They have so much of it and you can bargain the price down. But I’m not really into gold. I did write down several prices for things I might buy latter for our camping trip and other things – like a tent, portable stove, spices, etc. – but I did not buy anything save some lunch. My Lonely Planet suggested this small food place right in the heart of Deira. It was so small there were no tables inside – only outside. However, they did have umbrellas and a huge fan blowing. I had another egg sandwich – this one was good also – and another Lemon Juice. Then I walked back to the hotel and took a major power nap from 3:00 to 6:00 until Hilal came back from work.
He looked beat!!! A hard day at the office – I had plenty of those last year at school. So he took a little rest as we went over our plans for Oman and what to buy for camping. Around 8:00 we walked a short way to the Creek Overlook Restaurant which was right on the Dubai Creek. Hilal just needed a shesha and I had a great mixed grilled dinner (kebab, chicken tikka, ribs, lamb) and another lemon juice. The view was great but it was outside so a little on the muggy side. Hilal did not like his shesha and the food was just OK and a little over priced. So not the best choice from my other Dubai book. Back at the hotel, Hilal watched a little TV while I did my usual uploading pics and researching where to buy camping gear in Dubai. Went to sleep around 1 again.
