Hi, Everyone!

It's day two of the trip and we're spending the night in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  We'll be spending the day in the park tomorrow (Wednesday), which will be a nice rest from two full days of driving.

One thing we wanted to do on this trip is avoid the Interstates as much as possible.  Except for using the Interstate system around cities like Indianapolis and Cincinnati, we've stayed on U.S. and state highways and have enjoyed it.  We were also surprised at the fact that it didn't take us that much longer to get to our destinations.  We've especially enjoyed going through some of the smaller places like Brookville, Indiana, not far from the Ohio line, with some beautiful older homes dating back to the 19th Century.  We spent time with our friend Julie in Cincinnati last night, stopping for a great dinner and great conversation (thanks again, Julie) and stayed in Richwood, KY.  While it rained a fair amount of the time driving through Kentucky this morning, the rolling landscape through the Daniel Boone National Forest offered lots of scenery.  That rolling landscape slowly becomes mountainous once you move into Tennessee approaching the northern portion of the Appalachian Mountain Range and the Smoky Mountains.  We stopped in Gatlinburg, Tennessee (adjacent to Pigeon Forge) and had dinner.  Lots of places to take your money there, just like Pigeon Forge!  It's more than "a little touristy" so it's best to spend your time in the National Park, which is what we'll be doing tomorrow.

Another neat part of the trip is something I'd been looking forward to hearing: The drawl of the local dialect.  When we stopped for lunch in Manchester, KY, the young lady that took our order asked us, "What kin ah git y'all?"  When we left, she told us to "have a good'n." (Translation: Have a good one!)

And so we are.  After leaving the Smoky Mountain Park, we're headed to Asheville, NC and the Biltmore Estate on our way to Myrtle Beach and eventually Charleston, South Carolina.  Have a "good'n", y'all!
