Thursday, May 7, 2009 -- Back On The Road

Good Morning!

At least it's morning here. We leave Santa Fe today and hope to make it to Flagstaff, AZ. We've done a LOT here in a couple days and there's still plenty to do in a place like this. In fact, we plan on making a return visit here on the way back home next week to cover what we didn't do.

One of the highlights yesterday (Wednesday) was a visit to the Bandalier National Monument about an hour and a half outside Santa Fe. Human activity has been going on there for over 10,000 years. Yep, 10,000. Many ruins still exist from the various peoples that occupied the area. Families co-existed in caves and multi-story dwellings cut into the high cliffs, which you can view up close and personal, along with the foundations of other structures. After that, we continued a steep, winding drive up to a 9,000 foot elevation and stood on what was the rim of a volcano that erupted over a million years ago. Over time the whole thing collapsed, leaving an absolutely huge, huge valley that pictures can't adequately convey. They called it Valle Grande (Grand Valley) that spans an unbelievable 89,000 acres. It's humbling--and inspiring--to stand in places like these.

One thing I forgot to mention during our run through Texas. Adrian, Texas is the exact mid-point on Route 66. You can stand at a marker and be 1,139 miles in between Chicago and Santa Monica. We caught up with a camera crew from ABC-TV that was there doing a piece on 66, also a couple, newlyweds, in fact, from Sweden. They were married in Stockholm last Saturday, flew directly to New York, then to Chicago, rented a Harley and are driving 66 on their honeymoon. Great people, just like everyone else we've met along the way.

That's it for now. We have another perfect day here and the weather looks fantastic heading into Arizona. We'll check in from Flagstaff or parts close by later!
