Hi Again!

At 10:00am local time (actually coiniciding with Chicago time) we arrived in Cusco, Peru, after having left Chicago ON TIME (yes, it´s true!) at 4:30 Friday afternoon to Miami, then an all-night flight to Lima and finally, after a delay this morning, making it to Cusco.  This is one fascinating place, 12 thousand feet above sea level with a history going back well before the Europeans knew this continent existed.  Yes, we noticed the altitude right away, feeling somewhat light-headed, but not dizzy.  We were prepared for this and took it nice and slow, especially going up hills and stairs.  You have no choice.

Right after we checked into the hotel we started exploring the city´s historic district with its ancient streets going back centuries.  And they ARE ANCIENT!  Many are one lane wide with a sidewalk only a foot wide on either side.  You have to stand sideways when the cars fly by you...and they don´t stop for you, you stop for them!  Despite all this, no one got hurt and we've had a great first day here, not only enjoying the great sites and natural beauty, but the food as well.  By total chance, we stopped into a restaurant set in an old building on a small plaza (they´re all old here) and had a fantastic lunch.  In addition, the people are very welcoming and friendly.

We have to cut it short for now.  We hope to see our first Inca ruins nearby tomorrow (Sunday) before we head to Machu Picchu Monday.  We're also posting on TravelPod.com.  Thanks so much for all your great emails and wishes!

The Trekkers,

Dave And Paul Schwan
