Most of the people we talked to before, recommended us not to spend too much time in Jakarta, as it would not be so nice to visit as the other parts of Indonesia. If our flight to Singapore had not been fixed from Jakarta yet, we probably would have entirely skipped it.
And sure thing, the first impressions we had after our arrival were the garbage on the side of the train-rail, then heavy traffic-jams with loads of moterbikes and cars and a sadly polluted river.
On the second day in Jakarta though, we received an unexpected message from Andry - a fellow couchsurfer who noticed we were in Jakarta at the moment, and he offerd to be our cityguide. A couple of hours later, we met in person in front of the Monas monument
Similar to saying "let's meet up at Tokyo station" without mentioning a specific location or exit. Luckily Andry found us!)
He was very friendly and willingly used his sunday afternoon to show us around the city-center. When we got extremely hungry, he took us to one of the big shopping malls for dinnner. A unexpectedly modern three story foodcourt with loads of restaurants and nice atmosphere made it hard to choose, but we settled for traditional Javanese meals recommended by Andry. That turned out to be not only very delicious but also cheap.
We also found an official MAGNUM icecream "restaurant" that sold new creations of the famous brand. A looong queue at the counter kept us from giving it a try too.
Thanks to our new friend Andry we actually quite enjoyed our stay in Jakarta =).
Next stop; Singapore.
