Huacachina is located about 15 minutes away from Ica by car. They used to have 7 lagoons in the sand dunes, but after 6 of them dried out over time, now people are artificially adding water once in a while to preserve the last lagoon.

Originally, this place was made for peruvean celebrities to enjoy their vacation besides the lagoon, but now it turned into a popular Backpacker's destination for partying and experiencing the activities on the sanddunes like dunebuggy-driving and sandboarding.
When you see the lagoon, surrounded by the little village, from the top of the sanddune hill, it looks exactly like how you would imagine the word "Oasis". Unfortunately there are no camels here... ;)

We took a winery- and a sandbuggy/sandboarding-tour.

We visited three different wineries, one big manufacture and two small ones.
During the tour, we had a chance to taste several kinds of wines and Piscos. Pisco is the most famous liquor in Peru, well known as "Pisco sour" (the cocktail with Pisco, lemon, eggs and cinnamon) The Pisco is a very strong liquor produced by destilling a prestadium of wine. The taste is quite similar to Schnaps or Grappa.

The funny thing was, that the guide of the last winery was already totally drunk when he showed us around and let us taste their new wines. =)

As the surroundings are truly made for sandrelated activities, all of the hostels in Huacachina run Sandbuggy-tours and provide Sandboarding-equipment for rent. We have heard that the tours should be great, so we booked with our hostel the afternoon-trip.
As soon as our guide/driver had started the 15seated "sandmobil" it became pretty clear that it is gonna be a wild ride.
Knowing the dunes very well, we jumped with high speed over dunes and got could appreciate his crazy maneuvers. ;) (We are gonna upload a movie of the ride soon).
After arriving at the Sandboarding-location we all got our waxed sandboards and could give it a try to stand on them or drive down the dune on our butts/bellys - which is much easier. After mastering several huge dunes on the board (and getting sandy everywhere!!) our sandtaxi took us back to enjoy the rest of the sunset over the oasis.
