Show trip route
My first Malaysia trip was in 2008 which was more of a family vacation. I confess the travel itinerary was not well researched and I haven't been to a lot of prominent places. Also I endured a lot of suffering during this trip for not booking hotels and domestic air tickets in advance during the "tourist season" of August.
Hotel Hunt, Crazy Rainfall and B.B. Nightlife
We landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 7 am with drowsy eyes. The airport is massive and dazzling; no wonder we were lost for almost half an hour. We hired a taxicab to the city located one hour away from the airport
The cab dropped us off at Jalan Bukit Bintang. I asked my mom to order breakfast at a coffee shop as I went for hotel hunting. After one hour of extensive search, I winded up with zero vacant room. I checked all the hotels on both the sides of the street and they all were fully packed. Few hotels asked me to come back after 12 pm. On my way back to the coffee shop, it started drizzling in the middle of a sunny day. I bought an umbrella and started walking again. Within five minutes, the rain stopped. Equatorial climate is crazy. We waited at the shop till 11 am and killed time by tossing down some ten cups of coffee.
Finally we dug up a vacant room at The Federal Hotel. We decided to go for a walk in the evening. Bukit Bintang streets were crammed with middle-eastern tourists. We sat at a hookah bar and enjoyed a local DJ concert . After the concert, we started walking towards the Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) which includes the Petronas Twin Towers, the Suria KLCC Shopping Mall, a park, a five-star hotel and prime office blocks. By the time we reached KLCC, it was dark. The Towers looked magnificent against the deep sapphire sky. I must admit K.L. skyline at night is much glamorous than in daylight. KLCC was closed by the time we reached there.
Nightlife at Bukit Bintang is very happening. We shopped at Berjaya Times Square which is the 13th largest shopping mall in the world and very easy to get lost. After shopping, we parked ourselves at a café and enjoyed musical show till midnight
The Famous Towers and Movie Disaster
Got up late next morning and missed the free passes to the Skybridge. Skybridge is located between the Twin Towers on 41st and 42nd floors, which is also the highest two-story bridge in the world. You can get free passes to the bridge if you collect them by 8 am. We never could make it by 8 am.
We reached Petronas Twin Towers at noon. Other than taking photos, there isn’t much to do. Visitors are not allowed to go up (apart from the Skybridge) or even inside the office blocks. The geometric impression of the buildings is remarkable. The Towers were the world's tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004 and still remain the tallest twin buildings in the world. We visited the Aquaria KLCC which is an underwater park. Then we checked out the luxury shops at Suria KLCC, the Art Gallery and the Science Discovery Center.
After lunch we decided to watch a movie at the KLCC Theater. This movie called 'You Don’t Mess with the Zohan’ starring Adam Sandler just got released and there was a long queue at the booth. We bought tickets for the evening show. It was the worst movie I watched that year and a bad pick when you are with family. After wasting money at the theater, we decided to unwind by the fountains of the KLCC Park.
We reached the KL Tower in the late evening which is the eighteenth tallest freestanding tower in the world. The Observation Deck is 276 meters high from where we enjoyed the beautiful landscape of the city. Later we had dinner at the revolving restaurant which is 282 meters high from the ground.
On our way back to the hotel I met this brave Russian man at Bukit Bintang. He started world tour in May 2000 on his motorbike. The man was deaf and mute. We helped him by making donations. Hats off to his initiative and I hope he fulfills his dream.
After Kuala Lumpur, our next stop was the 'Las Vegas of Malaysia'.
