People really, really don't like Chumphon! The Lonely Planet
told us it was awful, travel agent in Koh Toa told us not to bother and
other travelers think it's downright crap, for instance read Andy and
Kerry's rundown titled Chumphon is Cr*p-

Chumphon is Cr*p by Andy and Kerry

On
the surface Chumphon is another grungy city but once you get
beneath it's exterior it's extraordinary and certainly not
crap.  We don't know Andy and Kerry so I'm just gonna go right
ahead and say - 'Andy and Kezza, Chumphon isn't crap, you are...Chumphon
is beautiful'.  Okay not beautiful...authentic. The people
are really friendly and smiley and the food is just amazing.

We
arrived on a Sunday and it seemed as if Chumphon was closed for the
day, there were very few people on the streets and only half the shops
were open. We checked into a guesthouse and decided to explore the
quiet streets of Chumphon. We walked and walked until we were well
and truly lost.

After sundown Chumphon transforms into a
completely different city.  People were out on the streets,
hawkers were setting up shop on the foot path and the night market was
gearing up for a busy night's trade.

Chumphon's
night market is something else...the food is to die for! One stall had
clay roasted duck with coriander another had frog curry with glass
noodles, drowning in chilies. Surrounded by all this glorious food it
is a mystery why we ended up at fried chicken stall.  Anyhoo, we
ordered up lots of greasy deep fried chicken doused in a syrupy chili
lime sauce and fresh chilies. And oh my god...it was so good!

Later, on our way home we did start to feel crap...from all that fried Chumphon chicken!
