Saturday, February 11, 2012 - We left our quiet little anchorage at 8:30 a.m. and were out on the Atlantic by 9:30 with a NW breeze gusting in the 20's. A perfect reach and a fast ride to Miami. We even hit 7's and 8's! Arrived at the Port of Miami at 12:30 pm and motored up the channel past humungous container and cruise ships. On the way to our anchorage Stan & Kathy had to anchor near one bridge that was a fixed bridge and they needed low tide to get under it. We continued on to the Belle Isle anchorage across from the Flagler monument and South Beach. Behind us is Star Island, one of the most exclusive island communities in Miami. A 10,000 sq. ft. residence lists for $12 million and it is said that Gloria Estafan lives there. After getting the anchor set we enjoyed sitting in the cockpit watching the boatniks frolicking. One yacht had huge speakers and dancing girls. Only in Miami. The winds increased around 8 pm with gusts to 30 and the cabin cruiser anchored behind us was suddenly bumping into us. The owner explained it happens all the time due to the tides and currents and 90' of line and very little chain. We decided to pick up the hook and find a better spot.So off we got in search of more room. Even though it was totally dark and blowing like stink, we did it. Anchored again. It was definitely a stressful evening. Denny kept a lookout all night long to make sure no one broke loose or swung into us. And no one did. (Pics below). Sunday, Feb. 12 - Morning dawns and it's still howling. The wind chill is 44! We'll stay put today and go sight seeing tomorrow when the weather improves.
