Thursday, March 10, 2011

Thursday, March 10 - This morning we rented a 4 passenger golf cart to explore the southern part of Elbow Cay and Denny was the designated driver. We drove outside of town on a narrow path with the ocean on one side and the Abaco sea on the other. We passed villas, cottages, the Abaco Inn resort and Sea Spray resort all the way to Tahiti beach. There are no gated communities here. One of the villas was called "Pieces of Eight". I wonder who owns that. Then we saw one on the ocean that was beautiful called "Cheers". Perhaps Ted Danson owns it. The ocean surf was spectacular and the waves crashing ashore were mesmerizing. We climbed over a dune and walked the shoreline. Tahiti beach is at the very southern tip of Elbow Cay. The tide was out and we walked out quite a ways. While hiking around the beach amidst the limestone deposits and dense mangroves, Denny found a tree hut made of wood boards nailed together and climbed up and took some pictures. We were all getting hungry so we headed for "On Da Beach" an outdoor bar and grill perched on a dune overlooking the ocean. We had delicious Wahoo burgers and of course Julie and I finally ordered a tropical rum drink. The guys had a Kalik, the Bahamian beer. It got its name because for over 2 centuries the Bahamas has celebrated the festival of Junkanoo with the distinctive "Kalik, Kalik" sound of cowbells, colorful handmade costumes and a celebration that lasts 'til dawn. Back to the golf cart and we headed into town to return the cart. We ran into Dale & Mercedes at the Hope Town Sailing Club's dingy dock. They had just arrived from Treasure Cay. We visited with them back on the marina dock.
