Goodbye to France and on to Germany. We knew we would go through Switzerland(which we had to pay $40 to drive through, but at least we didn’t have to constantly stop at tolls), Our drive through Switzerland began with roadsigns in French and ended with roadsigns resembling more Germanesque language. ). The drive took us right next to Lake Geneva, which was vast and surrounded by beautiful farmland and rolling hills. We didn’t really get the feel of the true Switzerland, but liked what we saw and would like to return someday and get further into the country to explore the mountains and culture.
We were hoping to go through Liechteinstein, but instead we found ourselves unexpectadly in Austria( a few guards eyed us, but we didn’t have to pay to drive through Austria. We reached Lake Constance right on the border of the three countries. We were able to visit four countries in one day
We actually stayed near Lake Constance in our first Gasthaus, a quaint family home style hotel with a few homey bedrooms, hardworking managers/cooks (fraus), and a wonderful large breakfast consisting of meats, cheeses, breads, marmalades and rich hot chocolate, very different from the smaller breakfasts in France, and we can see why the folks in Germany are a bit heavier than the French too. We loved the friendly village atmosphere with a social and busy market across the street where the village folk bought fresh bread, cheese and meat each morning. Outside our bedroom window was a maypole, which each village has, that represents the businesses in town.
We arrived, unpacked and went right away to an island in Lake Constance holding the town of Lindau. We walked through the village to the harbor containing dozens of boats and ducks. The lake is very large and cold and across the other side we could see ski runs in other countries. We wandered some more looking for a place to eat and ran into a wedding reception heading out on a large cruiser boat in all of their fancy outfits. We found a Swiss restaurant and watched the wedding partiers set off for the evening. We were once again too early for dinner, but not so much that they didn’t serve us. Audrey and I had a tasty Kasespatzel (Swabian (whatever that means) dumplings noodles with cheese and onions) while our parents ate perch and whitefish fresh from the lake. To finish it off we just had to have the Apfelstrudel with ice cream and unsweetened whipped cream, a German specialty and a favorite of ours. It was a fabulous dinner in the lovely island town.

Lake Constance
Special times - a small Gasthaus, locals foods, a wedding party. Great adventures. Annalisa, didn't realize you were writing until near the end of this blog - great job. Thanks to all for doing this.
Happy travels filled with our thoughts of love.
Ice cream
We love hearing about all the great food you're eating, and all the ice cream! Continuing our fine tradition from Paris. :-) Rachel says an extra-big Hi and 'miss you' to her glace girl cousins.
Love, Linda and Rachel
