Leaving Trinidad, we headed west to Cienfuegos. Our host in Trinidad had arranged accommodation for us with her friend in Cienfuegos, so after we found it we wandered up to Club Cienfuegos, a beautiful 1920s building situated on the bay. We had read it was possible to swim there and also enjoy a beachside cocktail. However it wasn't great swimming compared to the beaches we'd already been to, in fact it looked a pretty grotty, so we gave it a miss and just had a cocktail out on the terrace instead.
Cienfuegos was recently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its lovely architecture and French flavour, so we went into the town centre to Parque José Martí, admired the buildings, and took some photos of each other under the Arco de Triunfo, dedicated to Cuban independence.
We then drove down Punta Gorda to Moorish-style Palacio de Valle, full of tiles and turrets and with a fabulous view of Bahía de Cienfuegos. We went inside for a look and were contemplating a drink at the terrace bar, however it poured with rain just as we arrived so we decided to go back to the casas and get clean and dry for dinner.
I actually discovered in the shower that I'd picked up a little grass tick on my ankle, probably from the horseriding, and then later another one on my shoulder! They didn't like the insect stuff we had and luckily I'd packed tweezers so I was able to grab them as they wriggled out of my skin.
We returned to Club Cienfuegos for dinner and had a nice meal and more cocktails in the beautiful dining room, with the bay breeze drifting in the French doors.
