What I did
Embu Das Artes

Flag of Brazil  , State of Sao Paulo,
Thursday, December 29, 2011

Today was our first successful outing since my arrival in Brazil. We ventured down to Embu, still in Sao Paulo state. In Embu is a community/village/whatever called Embu das Artes, a big cluster of artisans stores on the mountainside. Its city center is a lot like that of Old San Juan, but it was BUSTLING. There were so many people!!
My brother was starving so he insisted we plop down in a café that faced the city park. I had beans and rice with filet of chicken. It was amazing and awesome and great and delicious and wonderful. When can I go back???
The town itself is much bigger than Alphaville, where we live, but the little community we were in (that we didn't dare venture out of -- surrounded by favelas), we were able to circle many times in the few hours we were there. The plant life, like all of Sao Paulo, was extremely lush, and really saturated every one of my pictures with great color. There was graffiti on some of the outer walls, but it only added to the artistic feel of the town. There was a central church, which I now regret not exploring, which was next to a quiet plaza (the only empty area in the whole place). It was great for catching our breath before going to explore again.
The artisans themselves vary greatly for the most part but from a wide look, focus on either furniture (movéis) or jewelry.
It was overcast most of the day and threatened rain. Also, it is the middle of the week between two major holidays, so I cannot imagine what the town's activity (or its parking) is like when none of these factors are present...

I apologize for not having images of the actual activity and people. It was probably safe, but I suppose I will never get to a point where I feel safe with a digital SLR in Brazil.
