The program I am on here offers a number of cultural excursions free of charge to the students so that we might fully experience the Italian way of life. Today's adventure was a to a local winery that was located in an old stone castle first used as a prison and then as a summer estate. We took a coach bus on a one hour road trip from Florence, through the winding hills of the Tuscany region and into the winery which sits on the outskirts of Sienna.

We were taken through the cellars and shown how the wine was fermented then racked into oak casks.

We then were brought into a large room where we sampled three different vintages of Chianti. This was then followed by a small glass of Vin Santo, a traditional after dinner liquor served with almond cookies.

This trip has certainly shown me the wonder and delight of wineries. I can't wait to return to the States and explore the many jems of the Napa Valley.
