The celebration that consumes this tiny, ancient city, is a celebration that rivals those the world over. Carnivale is its name, and Venice is the place. We set out early to the train station to catch a Eurostar train from Florence to Venice. The ride lasted about two and half hours; the scenery flying by ranged from hills to plains to vineyards.

Before we knew it we were among the many Canals of what I believe is the most beautiful city in Europe.

We spent a great deal of time walking across the many bridges, getting lost and found again.

The party began as night fell on the city. Street vendors sold everything from roasted nuts to unbelievable spiced, hot wine. We listened to the band playing on the main stage in San Marco square and navigated the narrow streets to find tiny bars with live entertainment.

The crowds of people engulfed every square. Girls twirling flaming canisters on chains danced to the primitive beats of live drums. The people moved as if they were connected; the crowd flowing from one location to another, always drinking, always singing. Finally, with dawn approaching, we caught a shuttle boat back to our hotel and gave in our tired dispositions.
