Away we go into another country, Vatican City. An independent sovereign state within Italy which contains one of the largest and most revered collections of art in the world.

Our guide, Fredericho, explained the context surrounding Michelangelo's painting of the Sistine Chapel as we stood in the courtyard outside the church. Upon entering the chapel talking is prohibited; hundreds of people stand and gaze at the masterpiece overhead. After the chapel we moved from room to room in the museum experiencing other sculptures, tapestries, and paintings. We then crossed the square to Saint Peter's Basilica. This stunning building is actually four times the size of the original design and houses Michelangelo's Pieta. My father viewed the Pieta during his travels in Italy years ago, just months before a psychotic artist attacked the sculpture screaming "You are too perfect". The nose was damaged but has been perfectly restored. The sculpture now sits behind a glass shield. With the glory of the Vatican city under our belts, we returned to the hotel to await the evenings festivities.
