Sami and I wrapped up our stay in Barcelona in a pretty remarkable way. We headed over to the La Sagrada Familia, which we both agreed would be one of the most remarkable sights of our entire trip. This is a project that Antoni Gaudi began working on in the later years of his life until he passed. Architects, sculptors and artist continue working on this amazing church today using sketches and models left behind by Gaudi.
We then took a stroll down to the ports, which was pretty touristy. (Kind of like our Pier 39) included is a picture of Sami giving this area a thumbs down. This was a quick glimpse, but we were able to sit right on the beach and enjoy a drink while staring out over the Mediterranean Sea.
Next, we ventured into the neighborhood referred to as the "El Gotic". This was one of my favorite neighborhoods as the dark, winding, narrow alley ways take you back in time. They are filled with people and there is a lot of energy here. These alley ways lead to another stunning sight, the Cathedral de Barcelona. We were able to go inside this cathedral and view tombs of many important religious figures of the past.
From here we walked to "La Rambla", which is a promenade leading to one of the most vibrant sights in the city, their "Mercat Boqueria". This open-air market puts our Ferry Building to shame. Here there is an amazing array of meats, cheeses, nuts, spices, fruits, vegetables, and chocolate. This is any foodies heaven on earth!
A walk back to our hotel past Gaudi's Casa Batllo ended our night, but noy before another craving for tapas was satisfies back in La Gracía.
