I arrived a bit worried about New Year, seeing as I knew no-one and you can never bank on meeting decent people. Well, I was in a room with three friendly South Africans and four crazy Canadians from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (hehe! Looked it up on the map.. it does exist after all..). Steph, Esther, Tessa and Curtis were on a gap year, bought a van and were driving NZ tip to toe.
We started the drinking games early and I was able to get drunk owing to the presence of the three lovely ladies (Can't drink when traveling alone otherwise). I'm used to having dinner with friends at this time of year, not going clubbing, so the foam party was a bit of a shock..
Stayed up to see the day in, got a few hours sleep then Curtis drove us down to the Redwood forest and Great Blue Lake (am I just making those names up?!) to check out the scenery... The smells of the forest were beautiful and I realised that smell is as important to me as seeing and hearing everything. It's just a lot more difficult to remember, which makes it a little bit more special.
It was great to get out for the day; I really loathed not having my own transport as some things were just out of reach! Hiring/buying a camper van is definitely the best way to see NZ.
It was sad to move on as I had really enjoyed everyone's company. That's the part of travelling that I'll never get used to!
