I felt like I was staring at a scene from the dawn of time, either that or The Land of the Giants. Looking at the photos I was seriously considering superimposing some pterodactyls on top.

This place was just unreal. The fact that we encountered it with very little sleep makes me wonder whether the memories are actually part of a dream.

We were awoken at 3am and piled into a jeep to be taken to the summit of a nearby viewing point. On the way there I could see flashes of midnight blue sky punctuated with bright orange. After that incredible sight I was on the lookout for wisemen bearing myrrh. The sunrise just got better and better, I think the best I've ever seen. We watched the mist rising around the volcanoes and slowly lifting to produce a lilac haze. The mountains in the background appeared to be sitting atop purple clouds.

We then drove down to the actual crater space and climbed up to the rim of the volcano. It looked like such a long way around! We had very little time but decided to do it anyway. I can't imagine that I nearly came close to missing out on that walk... It was pretty steep and occasionally we had to stop as the sulphurous fumes were overwhelming, but the views back into the crater made it look as if we could just lean over and tumble straight in.
