I was a total cinema junkie when I was here, as they're so cheap! Plus I'm on my own now so needed to get to grips with all the time to myself. The place is full of malls so I went and stocked up on essentials, even buying some diving equipment for my oncoming reef adventures. Not many Indonesians speak English so I bought a good phrasebook (The Lonely Planet's is surprisingly excellent) and just plunged right in. The first day consisted of two schoolgirls claiming they knew where I wanted to go and dragging me 6 km out of the city. It was an adventure anyway!
Whilst I was in Jakarta I visited one of the best ethnographic museums I've ever been to, I would have killed to come here when I was studying Indonesian culture for my anthropology degree. I had more or less forgotten a lot of the rituals but the memories came flooding back looking at all the amazing model houses, ritual costumes, masks and the `archaeology treasure room` filled with gold, diamonds and other jewels. It could easily have taken up two days of my time.
The food is obviously different too and I managed to order an avocado and melon juice... Sounds pretty terrible but it was unbelievable; smooth and sweet and not at all rich... They may well have to plug in a drip for me.
Anyway, I caught a flight to Sulawesi (for only 24 pounds!!) and realised that the internet here is truly pants and I may not have a choice in dropping off the radar for a bit!
