So we got a late night taxi from the cultural centre to Alleppey, hoping to get an 8hr cruise through the backwaters down to Kollam. When we woke in the morning however, there was a 'strike'. Except they were not actually striking... because of the recent elections the government had enforced the closure of businesses for the day to celebrate(!!!!!). So good work Indian government! Your dedication to the tourism industry astounds me, especially the fact that no restaurants were open. I didn't worry though... I knew there'd be a scab somewhere! And there was. But he wouldn't take us to Kollam, only cruising around Alleppey on a houseboat for an overnight tour.

It was expensive but the best 40 quid we've spent! We had our own personal chef and the whole boat to ourselves. We did nothing but sit in easy chairs all day and watch the scenery float by... perfect. We basically just sat there and were fed and watered. I think Marcus estimated that we got through a litre of tea each. Poor chef. The sunset was beautiful and we ate again before hitting the hay. The pictures do the talking really. They really are beautiful but unfortunately I need to find a place where I can upload them so you'll have to wait!

The next morning we began a mad dash across the country getting the bus to Kollam, then onto Varkala for the evening and catching a 2.30am train to Madurai! Spent the day in Madurai then got the bus to Tanjore, spent the day and night in Tanjore then got the bus to Pondicherry! Phew... all in 3 days.
