Craig and Liz planned a nice BBQ for the afternoon so we made a stop at the supermarket to buy groceries. Chelsea informed me that she had never heard of a rice krispy bar before. Turns out they have the same cereal, even with "Snap, Crackle, and Pop" on the box, but rather, it's called rice bubbles! :) So I bought ingredients for the bars, except their marshmallows were found in the candy section, and only regular mixed with raspberry flavored. They had a weird texture too and tasted a bit different. Anyways, made a batch of bars...
Every one arrived by late afternoon-- Jolee, Dean, Nathan and his wife Rose, Norm, Chelsea the neighbor girl and her dad Leo. The kiwis taught Zach and I how to play cricket in the park. I can't believe we don't play that in the states!
We grilled steaks, kebabs, ate salads we prepared earlier, drank New Zealand beer--all very good. We had many laughs and talked heaps about culture, politics, religion...you know, the topics that always seem to come up when a group of people get together over a couple of drinks. We ended the night with games of Mafia; a popular "who's who" game in the states as well as here.
The bars went over quite well! (unless, of course, they were all just being much too polite and choking them down)...just kidding. None of them had ever had a rice krispy bar before and were curious as to how they were made. Makes me wonder what such simple things--like rice krispy bars--I have yet to discover in this world...

Today we met up with Craig's dad and went to Howick Historical Village where they had a live heritage experience of the restored village back when Auckland was settled in the mid-1800's. It displayed both Maori and early European history. We saw different demonstrations such as a gun firing, log sawing,

Everyone minus Chelsea and Leo

Log sawing-hard work!
and fireplace cooking. It was all very interesting and educational, but I know how "exciting" it is to read about the small history details of a place if you've never been there so I'll explain it in pictures.
