It is an unusually sunny late November morning. The milky sunshine dances on the burnt autumn colours in the garden. We have never felt such a sense of freedom. Seven months of adventure stretches out before us and we are ready as anyone can be. With our backpacks and our practical travelling clothes, we feel and look the part, as if joining some unofficial club of world adventurers.
We make our last farewells with Mum down at Broadmarsh bus station in Nottingham, load our packs onto the coach, (this will to be a regular task over the coming months) and set off to Heathrow Airport at 1.15. Sarah's sister had bought us a travel scrabble set to keep our minds exercised. Hopefully, relieving the boredom of the not so exciting stages of the journey (if there are any!)and for us to have something to do in those tropical storms, so we set to and have our first of many games. Time flies and suddenly we pull into Victoria Bus Station in London, before catching the tube to Heathrow Airport. We arrive at Terminal 4 check-in at 6pm.
The check-in queue for Bangkok was a right mixture. Backpackers (yours truly included), business people of many nationalities, families on holiday, relatives visiting, Thais going home and Thais being deported. There are dubious groups and desperate looking individuals with sweaty palms, maybe going to look for their Thai bride!
'People watching' becomes an interesting pastime for us during our trip, guessing at people's motives, nationalities and placing them into categories. Not that it really matters though, just for something to pass the time with.
Having a few hours to kill before take-off, we have a bite to eat at Burger King and go to watch Concorde take off. The raw energy exerted by this beast cannot really be put into words and the two times in our lives we had experienced this sends shivers down our spines and shakes the foundations of whatever building we are in. It's a shame that they are going to be taken out of service soon, but I realize that they can't be the most economical jets in the world. Sarah phones her mum quickly to say good-bye for a while then we board QF302 at 8.45pm and set off for Bangkok.
Qantas are always one of the best caterers in the air. Dinner is lovely and fresh and consists of seared salmon with Pesto, parsley mash and spinach, with lemon tart to follow. Really very tasty indeed. Decide that the best thing to do is to rest as much as possible to be ready for the pressures of Bangkok, city of 8 million people and a complete culture shock. We eventually manage to doze off and dream of the adventures to come.
