To get there from Copenhagen, Zoe and I had to take a regional train to Roskilde first where were committed a major Danish faux paus. Zoe had never ridden the train with anyone else so neither of us realized that we had sat down in a "rest" car. We were having a nice, quietish chat when we were told by a lady that you can't talk in the car. I blame this on the bad sign system. The first three signs in the car were quite clear. A phone with a line through it, a dog with a line through it, and a cigarette with a line through it. The 4th one was just some phrase in Danish...apparently this is the one that tells you to shut up.
At Zoe's host family's house I had a wonderful home cooked meal that actually had spices on it AND I didn't have to wash any dishes. It was wonderful. Oh, and since you probably won't believe me, I ate both broccoli and mushrooms. The broccoli was gross. The mushrooms were tolerable. After dinner, her host dad went to "catch us some turtles," as he was trying to scare me into thinking we were eating turtles next. In fact, we actually just watched some (very odd) Danish tv while having tea and chocolates shaped like turtles.
After tea, I caught the bus back to Roskilde as it only comes once an hour. Then, I even managed to get on the right regional train back to Copenhagen! Very impressive.
As it was September 11th, I got off at Norreport, and walked to Vor Frue Kirke. This night was the last night of the art installation that simulated the church being on fire. I forget what I've already posted about it so here's a short summary. In 1807, 200 years ago, the British bombarded Copenhagen. It was the first time that weapons had been designed to strike specific targets and the Vor Frue Kirke (ie church) became their main target. Sure enough, the new technology works and the church burned down, as did much of Copenhagen. The British bombardment is considered to be the first modern act of terrorism. The installation ran from the 200th anniversary of the bombardment to September 11, the 6th anniversary of the last major terror attack in the US. Oh and this time I took better pictures.
Oh and for your entertainment, Britney Spears' comeback also made front page news here. Notice such familiar words as Britney Spears, comeback, and fart.
