Also, since this is a backpacker tour, meaning none of us, including the tour guide, are very mature, we had a photo stop outside the sign for the town called "Three Cocks." I mean really, who could resist? Apparently this is tame compared to some other names found throughout the UK.
Those are bilingual signs with the Welsh name for Three Cocks below it. So now you know how to say Three cocks in Welsh. Awesome.
Anyways, we ended up in Hay-on-Wye. I don't know if anyone else was that excited but this has got to be one of the coolest little towns ever. It's just filled with book shops. Every store is a bookshop! The town castle? Oh, it's a book shop too! And we are talking bargains as many of these shops buy overstock. So you can pick up new and old books for a pound each. I didn't buy anything since books are heavy and I still have plenty to read.
However, I did get to see some first editions and full sets of Jane Austin and Charles Dickens. A map shop had original old maps. And the castle bookshop had stacks of postcards and really old early 1900s photos of people traveling to Africa. I could have spent hours digging through all the stuff.
Here's a picture of my favorite bookshop.
It was located in the yard outside the castle and featured some very weather beaten books on shelves lining the whole area. It's the honesty bookstore because you have to be honest and drop the money for any books you take into a box.
Here's a view from the castle into the town. You can see some of the shelves of books below as well.
