Making the Plans. It's time! After months and months of dreaming and talking about it, I finally get to make the plans for my gap year. About a year ago this time, I remember talking to some friends, advisors and teachers during my time at the Chewonki Semester School about the possibility of taking a gap year. Since that day when my face lit up just thinking about the idea of a year off between high school and college, I haven’t stopped thinking about it. I’ve played around telling people I’m going to New Zealand, Costa Rica, Figi, etc., but I’m finally serious. I have (at least) something planned!

A couple weeks ago, I applied to Project Abroad’s Conservation Project in the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. I’ve sent in my deposit to work there for three months, I have my own Projects Abroad website, I’ve emailed my supervisor; It’s finally happening! I’ll be staying on the island of San Cristobal in the Galapagos, starting sometime mid to late June, and having the time of my life. Everyone knows the Galapagos for the famous Charles Darwin, who came up with his Theory of Evolution using observations of finch species on the islands, and ever since the Galapagos have remained a center for biological sciences. Located 621 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos islands have a national park, a marine reserve, and amazing habitat. For three months, I’ll be working on conservation projects to help with protection against invasive species, reforestation, park maintenance, agricultural activities, hiking, and helping with environmental education. This project is the epitome of what I wanted for my gap year because it combines the two things I love most: science and spanish.
