We have holed up in the prettiest town high above the provincial capital of Tucuman and the intense heat of the ´lowlands´. It is a popular get away for the Porteno´s (the upper class in Argentina) ... but that aside it is most picturesque set amongst mountains, rivers and lakes. Hot and grumpy after much bus travel and hanging around hot and sweaty bus stations ... we decided to give ourselves an over-the-budget treat and stay in a home that was the first building in Tafi de Valle ... a Jesuit convent. It has a proud history of being the Governor´s summer retreat, The current owners have lovingly converted it to a Posada (family hotel) in superb taste. The place is very reminiscent of those tasteful colonial homes ... with books on the shelves! Surprisingly most are in English and very old and mouldy!!
Julia has gone on long arduous walks, Sarah has cleaned every item of clothing and together we have mosied around the village and its surrounds
Tomorrow we are off to Cafayate .... a town at similar altitude but with dramatic shift in scenery ... to the more commonplace arid environment of this part of Argentina. It is a town famed for its artists and cultural activities where Louise will be meeting up with a friend of a friend ... who never returned home to the Netherlands from her travels thirty years ago!

. This morning we took a good walk to see an Ecological farm established by an Argentinian and New Zealander. It was most interesting and they are highly industrious and creative ...even making their own liqueurs. Christina (from NZ) spent a lot of time with us and we learnt a lot! It was so refreshing after Spanish only guides or museums that have very scant information. In fact most are really poorly displayed.
