On the way we stopped at the "Gum diggers Park", where they found giant Kauri Trees preserved in the peat that were 45 000 - 150 000 years old. When they found them, about 200 years ago they gathered the gum or pitch that was around the roots to make varnishes and laquers.
Today the whole area is a park and you can see the trees under the ground and we learnt all about the history of the area.
When the Europeans first settled in NZ they cut down almost all the Kauri Forests to use as masts for their ships and to export around the world
After going to the light house at Cape Reinga, we went sand boarding on the giant sand dunes. Great fun... Will was trying to show off and had a huge fall.... he is still finding sand in his ears and eyebrows....
We drove our bus on the beach, called 90 mile beach for about an hour.... it was beautiful even though the weather wasn't great.
We are now back in Auckland, we fly to Melbourne tomorrow morning. Its kinda bitter sweet leaving NZ. We have had such a great trip here but we are excited for the next part of our trip.
