We arrived in Taupo today after spending the last couple days in the pouring rain. We travelled up the west coast, along the Wanganui River to New Plymouth which is where Mt. Taranaki is. Its a huge 2518m volcano, but because of the weather we weren't able to get a clear look at it. We spent a few days waiting around for the weather to improve but eventually gave up.

Next we heading towards the Tongariro National park where there is a series of 3 large mountain ranges, some of which are more active volacanos. In fair weather you can actually take a 6-8 hr hike across one of the mountain ranges up to a crater. Apparently this one hike is the "best one day hike in NZ" but again, because of the foul weather the whole thing was closed to hikers. I guess they  had heavy rain/snow and winds at the top so it would have been too dangerous. We drove up as far as we could ourselves and did a few hour hike in the lower altitude areas but you couldn't really see much, as far as views go. Its too bad... this hike is one of the things that Will, especially, wanted to do.

On the edge of these volcanoes they have a few ski areas. Its all based on 5000-10000 year old lava! There are signs up there with warnings of what do to incase there is an earthquake or an eruption... would be pretty scary being up there!!!

We are now in Taupo, on the edge of Lake Taupo. The lake itself is quite nice and on a clear day you can see right across to the National Park. Taupo is apparently the best place to go skydiving in NZ.... sorry grannie and mom... you probably don't want to hear that! We have been thinking about doing it for a while but we are going to wait until we work a bit more because its not cheap to do.

anwyays, here are some pictures from the past week... enjoy!
