We did a small hike up to a lookout on the Sounds and it was unbelievable. Every where you looked was a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. NZ never ceases to amaze us.... its all just so beautiful and rustic. So many areas are untouched with barely any people around too.
We spent a night in Picton before we caught the ferry over to the North Island, and stayed at the nicest hostel so far. The place was right across the street from the main cemetry and was called the Tombstone Backpackers. The front door was shaped like a coffin lid.... kinda creepy. But once we walked in the place it was fantastic. If there was more to do in that town, it would have been nice to stay longer.
Yesterday we took the morning ferry from Picton to Wellington, on the North Island. And we thought our BC Ferries were expensive......... we paid $240 for the two of us and the car. CRAZY!!! The ferry itself was much smaller and rundown then the ferries at home and took about 3.5 hrs. The first part of the drive was through the Marlborough sounds and it was gorgeous. The sun was just coming up and you could see the ocean steaming from the heat. We barred the cold and stood outside for most of the journey, just to look at the view. We even came across a huge pod of dolphins... probably about 50-60 of them. They were jumping right out of the water and riding the ships wake. It was a nice treat, first thing in the morning!
Wellington, so far, is a very nice city. Its the capital city of NZ and is the main hub of the country, other then Auckland. Lots of waterfront walkways and a nice downtown feel. We are going to stay 2 nights here and then continue on our way.
