We landed in NYC last Wednesday. We made our way to the New Jersey and washed every article of clothing we owned. It was GREAT! We smell a lot better now!
Then we spent the rest of the week apartment hunting. There is SO much to learn about all the different boroughs and neighborhoods within those boroughs. Some areas are super nice, but then you walk down a couple blocks and it gets sketchy, fast. We sat in coffee shops in Williamsburg, bugged the hipster baristas for cheap coffee and clicked refresh on craigslist for days and days!
In the first few days we sent dozens of e-mails and received just ONE positive reply, ack
There are way more 1 month sublets than anything else on craigslist, so we grabbed a nice one to give us some stability for a while. Go look at the pictures! We're staying in New Jersey, which is apparently the best part of New York. :)
NYC feels so quaint after Beijing, Tokyo, Bangkok... its hard to believe I (Graham) used to think of New York as an overwhelming place. The food is cheaper than Europe, especially Iceland! But the rent is CRAZY! We might be able to afford to stay waaay at the tippy top of Manhattan, but thats about it, unless we become the 5th and 6th roommates in some itty bitty Upper East Side place. We're hoping for a place in Astoria (Queens), or somewhere not too sketchy in Brooklyn, or maybe even somewhere in New Jersey.
Hopefully in a few days we'll have it all figured out and we can start going out to enjoy the city more! We want to see so many museums... and there are DOZENS of amazing concerts... aaaa! Graham starts work next Tuesday, it should be great! We had a very nice time staying with one of his co-workers while we searched for apartments, he was extremely kind to us!
We'll probably post another blog now and then with updates from NYC. But for now our big trip is officially over, wow! Now we have to start working on the scrapbook... we have five gigabytes of photos to go through... woo!
