Get got the jungle railway from Kota Bharu to Jerantut, the hop off point for Taman Negara. The train journey was really cool going through the jungle and the whole journey took about 10 hours and apart from one cheq guy we were the only westerners on the train. Managed to finish my book Shantaram -which is excellent by the way.
The bs from Jerantut to Kuala Tehan took nearly 2 hours and when we got there we checked into the Liana hostel which was basic but comfortable. The staff there were very helpful and allowed us to stow our luggage the following day when we were going to do our trip to the hide
Next morning we got up and had breakfast and headed to the resort to get our passes for the park and our accomodation in the hide sorted out. we made one huge mistake - we did not get up early enough! and as a result we ended up trekking to the hide in the full heat of the midday sun. The journeyu seemed ,uch longer than it was and we both were exhausted when we got there but still for the next hour after we arrived we were plucking leeches from our clothes boots and bodies - those things are so hard to kill! 4 of the feckers got me and it took ages for the cuts to stop bleeding. The hides themselves are really cool, they are raised basic building in the jungle where you can look out through oupen windows on all four sides at the wildlife walking through the national park. We saw wild deer, fireflies, geckos and bats and from the scratching and crawling noises at night we recon there were rats around but we didn't see them. But all night long the sounds from the jungle were just spectacular and they were loudest at dusk and dawn.
Next morning at sunrise we headed back to Kuala Tehan and the trip took less than half the time. Later after breakfast we took the canopy walk over the forest and then headed back to town to get the bus to Jerantut to head to Kuala Lumpur.
We had a real good spell of luck, when we headed down to the bus station the bus wasn't supposed to go until 3pm and as a result we would miss the bus to KL but some aussie guy had just arrived by minivan and the minivan driver offered to bring us to Jerantut for the same price as the bus fare and as a result we made our connecting bus.
