We arrived in Airlie at around 3ish. We had booked our Whitsundays tour and our Fraser Island tour through a tourist information centre in Cairns with Beaches Backpackers. We were supposed to go on the 2 day 1night tour of the Whitsundays on the Siska yacht but when we were on te bus to airlie we got a call to say that the Siska was not running so we got upgraded at no extra cost to the two day two night on the Boomerang. That was class for us as it meant a free nights accomodation and 2 extra free meals and the Boomerang is the Party boat so it was all people our own age. For those boat racing enthusiasts the Boomerang raced under the name Ondine VII, and achieved great success including 1st place in the World Maxi Series Race, plus races in the USA, Japan and NZ. Up until late 2001 Boomerang was still competing in tough Ocean Races, such as the Auckland to Suva Race. SPECIFICATIONS Maxi Boomerang, designed by German Frers, and built in Italy is a sloop design, 83ft in length, 20ft wide, built of high tech Carbon Fibre with a mast extending 110ft above the deck. - it's like the Formula 1 of the sea.
Whitsundays Day 1
So the next morning we checked out of the hostel and made our way with our suppplies Goon and TooheysNew to the marina to get the boat. As it turns out Tamlyn and Liz were on our tour. There were 23 people plus the cook, Deck hand and skipper on board. I would highly recommend this tour to nice sound people. The two days sailing were amazing we hit some large swells on the open water and many times everyone on board got soaked. As the yacht races through the water everyone other than the skipper and the deck hand has to sit on the side of the yacht tilting out of the water to act as ballast. At times the ycht was at 60degrees and apparently in racing conditions in rough seas it can tilt to 110degrees before trouble starts. On the first day we headed north and went snorkelling on the fringe reef. It was good fun but visibility wasn't nearly as good as Green island. Then we sailed some more before settling down for the night.
It was quite easy to tell the Irish and English on the tour both from the pastyness of the skin and the the speed at which they were able to locate the contents of the eskey! Some of the English guys showed Fuller and me some new games (Fire and Ice) but that led to Paul's demise very quickly and latter in the evening when the deck hand "Lachy" was tryiung to get group games going to gel the group pour Fuller struggled to grasp the concepts which everyone else found quite funny at paul's expense, but like water off a ducks back Paul didn't let it get him down.
Tam and Liz ended up doing private dances on the back of the boat for our (the three of us) enjoyment - to the tune of I get all the girls song!
That night the two of us sat out looking at the stars before calling it a night but Fuller continued on till the early hours and was one of the last people standing, just him one of the Finish girlsa Dutch girl the English girls and some of the Irish and English guys.
WhitSundays Day 2
We got up at around 6.30am and had breakfast, the beds on the boat had been really comfortable so we were well rested for the day ahead - except Paul! The option was there to go diving at an extra cost but only 3 of the group -the Hong Kong couple and one of the Irish guys availed of that. Instead the rest of us went snorkelling on another part of the reef. Then we preped the boat for sailing again and headed suth towards Whitehaven Beach. When we got there we met up with some of the other boats and bumped into Rina the Yorkshire girl from the Ayers Rock tour. We got to spend over 2 hours on Whitehaven beach - which is considered one of the top 5 beaches in the world, it really was a class beach. After a while some people started to get board of just lying around so the three of us and Tamlyn and Liz started posing for photos. - This is where you willl soon see some great pictures of Fuller in his natural environment (the alpha male, proud, protective, content !) We also made a human pyramid which worked out well. Another boat tried to copy us but theirs collapsed and they ended up looking like fools like fools!
That night was a more timid affair and we were told supersticious stories and funny past boat tour stories by the deck hand and actual horror stories that the skipper witnessed in his time of racing these yachts, he witness crew members getting decapitated and losing limbs for being stupid or clumbsy on board.
Next morning we sailed back to Airlie Beach.
That afternoon we spent chilling in the hostel before getting the overnight bus to Hervey Bay
